While endometriosis is commonly associated with pelvic pain, individuals often experience few or no symptoms other than difficulty becoming pregnant. Fertility specialists may recommend endometriosis testing in such cases to gather enough information to support treatment planning. Here is what to expect before, during, and after the testing process:

    Why Testing Is Recommended

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside the uterine cavity. It is a condition that is often associated with recurrent pregnancy loss, failed embryo implantation, inflammation of the uterine lining, and unexplained infertility. Some individuals don’t experience any noticeable signs, making infertility the only noticeable symptom. Fertility experts may recommend an endometriosis test because the condition is not always identifiable through routine fertility evaluations. Patients pursuing in vitro fertilization (IVF) benefit from such tests because possible inflammation of the uterine lining provides valuable information before additional embryo transfers. Specialists recommend this step when previous evaluations failed to identify a clear explanation for unsuccessful IVF outcomes; this provides them with a broader diagnostic process to identify factors that may be affecting the patient’s reproductive health.

    What Happens During a Consultation

The testing process usually starts with a consultation where the fertility specialist reviews past treatments, medical history, and current symptoms. They evaluate several aspects, including previous IVF cycles and pelvic symptoms. This in-depth analysis helps them understand the patient and their clinical history.

The health provider will determine whether additional diagnostic testing is appropriate during the appointment. Patients can ask about their previous fertility evaluations and IVF treatment. This gives them more insight into the purpose of endometriosis testing and how it fits within their treatment plan.

The consultation stage provides valuable context before testing is performed. Since fertility specialists evaluate multiple factors beyond a single symptom, they can better determine whether additional investigation is warranted. This process allows them to make informed decisions, and it makes sure that testing is guided by a thorough understanding of each patient’s situation.

    What Endometriosis Testing Involves

One form of endometriosis testing involves evaluating biomarkers associated with inflammation of the uterine lining. Tests analyze BCL6, a biomarker highly associated with inflammation in the uterine lining. This marker is commonly linked to endometriosis, and fertility specialists perform the check during a scheduled appointment.

The procedure begins by collecting a small tissue sample from the uterine lining for laboratory analysis. A positive result provides information that fertility specialists use when assessing a patient’s condition and determining next steps in evaluation. Laparoscopy involves a surgical examination of the pelvic area and is used as part of the diagnostic process for endometriosis.

    What a Positive Result Means

Receiving the test results is not the end of the process but the beginning of the next phase of treatment. Fertility specialists interpret the findings and compare them with fertility treatment history and medical history to recommend possible treatment options before proceeding with another embryo transfer. Some treatment options include the following:

    • Removing lesions with ablation or excision techniques
    • Hormonal treatments that help regulate the cycle or lower reproductive hormones
    • Implants to manage pelvic pain and slow tissue growth
    • Lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and recreational drug use

The treatment recommendations will vary between patients depending on their medical circumstances and overall fertility plan. Specialists consult with their patients to find an individualized treatment plan that aligns with their goals. They also discuss additional topics regarding IVF planning, timing, and future treatment decisions.

    Work With a Fertility Specialist

An endometriosis test helps patients make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Through early diagnosis, they can get more specific treatment options tailored to increase their chances of becoming pregnant. Start by working with a fertility specialist to receive the proper tests and learn about your treatment options.
